Unlocking Gouache: A Beginner’s Guide to Opaque Painting
Instructor Donna Shortt
Saturday, November 1
10a – 4p
$135 members, $150 non-members
Spend a day with Guild member artist and instructor, Donna Shortt. An award-winning painter, Donna will deftly lead the group through methods of painting with gouache. How to use the paint to design compositions for larger works in any medium. How to use it in a Plein Air setting and in a studio setting. She will talk about all the different supports one can paint on. How to frame and varnish will be discussed as well.
Schedule: The first two hours will include instruction about the materials and how to use the paint, along with a demonstration. After lunch, the class will work on their own with Donna’s expert assistance.
Supplies: Your favorite watercolor/acrylic brushes. Donna prefers flats. Winsor Newton gouache paints – cool and warm in each color, black, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna. Lots of white! Very low tack artist’s tape. Your own reference photos on a tablet or printed on photo paper. A small spray water bottle, two water cups to wash brushes in. Towels. A pencil.
Donna will have 5×7 illustration boards to practice on and palettes to mix paint on. You may also bring sturdy watercolor paper, matboard cut into small sizes, or a sketchbook with thick pages. If you prefer to stand up at your own easel, please bring it, or there will be tables with chairs.
As space is limited, there are a minimum of 6 registrations – 10 maximum.
